Address of peace – Auroville

Experiments on Human unity is no longer just a dystopian concept that can be contained in books. Even though books (which were later made into movies ) like the Divergent series and The Hunger Games series, brought to us images of a city which were successful experiments in building an ideal township, are relatively new in the market, a small city situated in south India has been existing as one such city since the late 1960s.

Auroville, for the most part in Tamil Nadu just a couple of kilometers inland from the vast Coromandel Coast, is the city mentioned above. It is not only the first, but the only internationally endorsed experiment on human unity which is still ongoing. Located approximately 150 km south of Chennai and 10 km north of the well-known and celebrated town of Puducherry, it also delves into the transformation of consciousness, sustainable living and the cultural, environmental, social and spiritual needs of mankind in the forthcoming years.

Dwelling a bit into the history of Auroville, we will find that the idea of Auroville – a perfect township committed to a trial in human solidarity – took shape in The Mother as early as the 1930s. In the mid 1960s the Sri Aurobindo Society in Pondicherry proposed to Her that such a township ought to be built. She gave her endowments. The idea was then put before the Govt. of India, who gave their support and took it to the General Assembly of UNESCO.
