New Year’s resolutions. A phrase that is quite familiar to everyone. And now, it is attracting a reasonable amount of memes, not without reason. When you make resolutions and go on to break them, the point remains that you wanted to do something new to complement the new start of another year. Then what is it that is lacking?
“A river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence.” -Jim Watkins
So, don’t you dare give up!
Here are five things that you should start doing to embrace the new year with a smile.
Make friends with a Diary
All of us have definitely had diary writing as a goal for some new year or the other. While only some go on to continue the good habit, many leave it behind after a day or two. Who writes every day? Meh. But what we need to understand primarily is the purpose behind this beautiful habit. Diary-writing not only makes you mindful, it gives you a chance to retrospect and analyze your doings for the day- whether right or wrong. It improves your writing skills and lets you find happiness in the small things that bring happiness. If you’re a busy person, or you do not wish to write down your thoughts, then at least make sure you speak to yourself for a few minutes every day. Take note of the fact that you are your biggest critic and well-wisher.
Say goodbye to procrastination
Remember Kipling’s words in the poem ‘If-‘?
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
So invest your time in things that matter and make the best use of each second.
Be it an hour-long gym session, or just a light stroll in the evening while walking your dog, just make sure you give proper movement to your body so it can stay fit. Remember, your body is your place of residence for a lifetime and it is upon you to take good care of it.
Read. A lot.
When they say a reader lives a thousand lives before he dies, they’re not wrong. What you read now shapes the person you are going to become. Before you set out to conquer the world, just make sure you stuff yourself with enormous amounts of knowledge and have a good foundation of facts and information with you. There’s nothing like a full, fresh brain dripping with ideas that can give you a lion’s confidence.
Don’t part with your smile, no matter what.
Easier said than done, right? But being happy is the least you can do to acknowledge the wonder you are. One of the most important criteria for attaining success is to have a good and pure heart. Give your best effort, and wait to watch the universe conspire to give you what you deserve. And all along the way, don’t forget to have that smile on your face. When you’re happy, it radiates positivity from you. So turn that frown upside down!
