Someone reading The Adventures of Tom Sawyer might be familiar with the character of Tom Sawyer from another novel by Mark Twain: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. It is a sequel to The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Mark wrote The Adventures of Tom Sawyer in 1876.
Tom Sawyer is a mischievous boy. After Tom getting into the trouble, Aunt Polly, with whom he lives, ordered him to whitewash their fence. Whenever his friends see him painting, he pretends that he loves the chore of painting the fence to make his friends jealous. They always used to beg him to let them help in his chore. This is a prime example of the type of problem Tom Sawyer is always getting up to.
Most part of the novel is devoted to Tom’s romantic moments with Becky Thatcher who was a new girl in town. They used to like each other, but Becky got hurt when she finds out that Tom had a feeling for someone else prior to her. He took the blame for a book she ruined and tried his to make her like him again.
Tom was always getting into some of the other trouble with his friend Huckleberry Finn. They used to sneak out to a graveyard at night together and once they witnessed Injun Joe murdering Dr Robinson. Tom, Huck, and their friend, Joe Harper, ran away from the town so that everyone thinks they are dead. They came back and Tom became eye witness of Doctor’s murder against Injun Joe in court.
But when Injun Joe ran away, Tom became very scared. But His terror does not stop him from making trouble. While he and Huck went on hunting for treasure one night. Both of the boys discovered that Injun Joe, who was disguised as a deaf-mute Spaniard, has a treasure of his own to bury. Huck agrees to spy on Injun Joe to see where he buries the treasure. And Tom goes on a picnic with his class to McDougal’s Cave. During the picnic, Tom and Becky wander off and get lost.
Huck figured out that Injun Joe was going to hurt Widow Douglas. As he reported his crime, Injun Joe ran away to McDougal’s Cave. Meanwhile, Tom and Becky are lost for several days in the cave. Eventually, they stumble across Injun Joe but hid before he sees them. But somehow Tom figures out how to get out of the cave with Becky. He tells Judge Thatcher about Injun Joe being inside the cave. The town decides to seal Injun Joe inside the cave.
Later, Tom when returns to the cave, where he discovered Injun Joe’s starved corpse. and after a little while, he and Huck discover where Injun Joe hid his gold. The Widow Douglas adopts Huck, who was unhappy about this development. Tom convinces him to give it a try, promising that it won’t stop them from getting up to the occasional mischief.
I really love this book. I remember my teacher reading it to the entire class when I was a child. One of my favourite part of the story is when he convince someone to white wash the fence for him. Lol
